 "'Diet' No More" 2009-04-01

I like to 'audition' my books before purchasing and borrowed it from the library first. Ms. Somer has the right attitude and great info on WHY we 'shoot ourselves in the foot' when it comes to losing weight (from now on referred to as GETTING HEALTHY.)

While stressing that ultimately WE have to take responsibility for our health, she tells us it not easy when we live in a 'toxic environment' and so many bad things are promoted so well, packaged so attractively and yes - taste so good! What she writes rings true; each of us who is overweight practices at least one of the habits. Ms. Somer tells you the probable source of the habit, in some cases the physiological reasons for it and offers plenty of solutions to help you change the habit.

One of my least favorite activities is keeping a food journal; I tried it before and it only made me more depressed (which, of course, lead to emotional eating). Even though she mentions it several times as a solution for starting to change a habit, thankfully she admits it's not for everyone and offers alternatives later in the book.

I've already recommended this to several friends.

Enjoy and be healthy!

"Great Advice to Help You Break Food's Grip!!" 2009-02-11
By K. Paul (Fort Greely, Alaska)
This book helped jump-start my quest to lose 25 pounds, it is a common sense approach to controlling your diet, instead of letting your diet control you. This book showed me how I had been lying to myself for years, it really has changed my whole perspective about eating, dieting, and exercising. The author teaches wonderful strategies to help combat the temptations faced when eating out, going to parties, and ways to bite back the late night munchies. I read it, lent it to my Mom, and bought a copy for one of my best friends. A Jewel among the basket of rhinestones that is dieting books today.

I gave it four stars because I think most food should be eaten in it's most unprocessed forms, and do not condone the use of fat content-altered products like lowfat/no-fat dairy, and soy products. However, this book is not a diet, so the rest of the information is great!

I enjoyed this book because it was not specifically about weight loss. The focus was on nutrition and it really made me want to be healthy!

I checked this book out at the library and liked it so much I puchased it. Not anything I don't already know, but to see, in actual print, all the reasons why and how you cheat on a diet is much more motivational than you would think. Ouch! The truth really hurts but it's also really helped.

 "Common sense, great reminders" 2006-07-11
By Lois Lain (San Francisco Bay Area, CA)
Finally, a book about diet that isn't a diet! Instead, it's a compilation of all the information about losing weight and keeping it off through lifestyle changes. Easy to read, nicely presented, this book set me on a one-year plan to lose those last 10 pounds -- one habit at a time.
