I soooo wanted to really love this item, as I enjoy anything that makes my life a little bit easier. I like the concept of it, and do think it's an excellent idea, but feel there are still bugs needing to be worked out of the system.



The voice recognition really isn't the best, even on basic food staples. I mean how can it fail to find milk? But mine doesn't seem to be able to. Even the list of "suggested" items when it can't find the milk is odd in and of itself. I mean "pretzels" nowhere resembles milk linguistically so why does the machine suggest it as a "did you mean this?" item substitute. So then I go to the enhance voice recognition option. I'm clear, concise and articulate, and yet it STILL can't seem to recognize the item, which leads me to believe this option doesn't work at all. I'm constantly having to look up items in the library and add them manually. Kind of defeats the purpose of having this nifty little machine don't you think? While that's not a huge hassle, it still bites because you end up spending more time trying to input on the darn thing, when the process should have been as easy as hit the record button and add your item.



I do like the fact you can keep two lists, and it will print your grocery list by category, saving you from having to double back and retrace your steps because you forgot an item clear back on aisle 9. Maybe the next generation will be better.

In my experience, this is a very poor item and not worth half the price. It comes with very limited vocabulary, no sub-catagories for general food classifications and poor voice recognition.



It has a fast printer and the list it prints out is easy to read.

I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my wife, who this product seemed ideally suited for. (i.e. She makes two long grocery lists each week for some complicated and delectable dinners.) The features seemed ideal and, with a price this high it seemed more than a toy. Well, it was LESS than a toy. Voice recognition might as well not be listed as a feature. The display screen went blank the second time we used it and a call to Smartshopper's technical support (sounded like someone working in their basement) could offer no advice. I printed two short lists and the type was barely legible on the left-hand side of the print out. There is no way to enter a grocery list with a keyboard (well, one which made sense anyway). This device is a piece of junk and I recommended that Amazon drop it (and Smartshopper) from any product offering in the future. DO NOT BUY THIS!

This works very well for us, but like some users, the voice recognition is not as good as we would like. The thing you have to remember is that you cannot just say "tomatoes." You have to say "canned tomatoes" or "fresh tomatoes." It has been really helpful to us so far.

I bought this for my wife as a Christmas gift. We were both excited. After 3 minutes out of the box it stopped working. The display went blank and that was it. Removing and replacing the batteries and performing a unit reset for a "lock up" according to documentation would not fix the problem. Disappointing gift.

The product works well. The voice recognition isn't the best but you can make modifications. Only complaint I have is the organization of the printed list. The printout by category is confusing when shopping since some items in a single category are found in multiple aisles. You can alter the list to match your grocery stores aisles, but I find that to be too time consuming. I would like to be able to print a list alphabetically. Over all I'm satisfied with the smartshopper.

This went of real big right off. As advertised, it took a bit to get the machine to understand all the requests and it was neat that it gave some alternatives when it was not sure what was being said. This was a present for someone who goes to the store for bread and milk and comes home with dollars worth of groceries that probablhy do not include the above.

You have to say the word multiple times before the machine gets it, and even then it may come up with "enhiladas" when you are screaming "chips". Your neighbors will probably get a better idea of what you need at the store. I like the idea, but the technology is just not there...at least not in this model.

I found that I have had to reenter most of the products I use with the names I call them and in my voice before the voice recognition would pick them up correctly. This has taken a lot of time, but it is paying off now as I now only have to say the name of the item once or twice to get it to go in.

During the past month, I have been having a lot of stomach issues and between doing research on the web and consulting of my friends and parents it seemed like I have either have developed a wheat allergy or have Celiac disease. After I started watching out for wheat products (and avoiding them), I am feeling much better.



That being said, this book is a good resource to get started to understand what is available and what is not. There are some limitations since this is a printed guide to what's new in products but gives useful information nonetheless...



There are a few cons that I like to point out on this book...

1) As stated above, the list gets outdated when printed; a online version would be great...



For example, some Chex cereals are now gluten-free (corn, rice) and more are coming...



Users of this manual should also have an acount on the American Celiac Society page and subscribe to food updates (also to check out new food offerings).



2) The listing of store brands seem to be of some large regional stores that are not in certain areas such as Safeway, Publix and Wegmans. Since I live in the west, I shop in Safeway but some areas in the Northeast, Central US and parts of the South do not have these stores; buyers in these areas have to be careful of the generic brands.



When it comes to generic brands buyer beware. For example, I mention Corn and Rice Chex cereals are gluten free. Safeway's generics are not; they contain Malt which is a wheat-gluten product. So you need to watch for hidden ingredients wheat-gluten products...



3) There should be a page, in the beginning of the book, where they itemize suspect wheat-gluten ingredients such as malt, modified starch, gluten, and others.



4) A quick tutorial of how to read ingredients (now a must) would be nice but there are some good websites that are I found on Google...
